I’ve always been intrigued by the city of the soul.
The idea reaches back to John Bunyan’s 1682 allegory The Holy War, where the human soul is pictured as a town called Mansoul, with gates for the eyes, ears, and mouth, a castle at its heart, and a King who fights to win it back. That picture never left me.
My mind has always been imaginative, a world of its own, with streets for every story and rooms for every idea. So I built my portfolio as a city, and every building holds a part of my work. Start here:
Then feel free to wander. The rest of the city is open too:

Welcome home. Here you can learn more about the woman behind the work.
I’m a sunflower soul: rooted in faith, turned toward the light, still blooming after hard seasons. I hear poetry in quiet moments, see stories in ordinary places, and paint hope where grief once lived.
I’m Veronica “So Creative” Essex, a multi-hyphenate creative director, writer, designer, digital illustrator, and poet based in the Washington, DC metro area.
For more than twenty years I’ve been turning ideas into things people can see, hear, and feel: national retail campaigns and in-store activations for DTLR with partners like Nike, Jordan Brand, and New Balance; brand identities for nonprofits and small businesses through my studio, SoCre8tive Enterprises; stage productions like Good Grief, Great GOD; and scripts, spoken word, and illustration in between.
Whatever the medium, I start with the story: who it’s for, what it needs to say, and how it should make someone feel. My faith and the seasons I’ve walked through shape that lens, which is why so much of my work comes back to hope, healing, and showing up whole.
I hold a BFA in Fine Arts from The Art Institute of Washington.
I write scripts and stories that blend truth, creativity, and purpose into powerful, spirit-led storytelling.
A stage play about losing my mother to stage IV cancer and learning that sorrow and hope can live in the same breath. An excerpt from the opening:
SCENE 1 · THE DECLARATION
VERONICA walks in between two models. Models and Veronica all remove the tape on their mouths at the same time.
VERONICA
This is my public reckoning, the shedding of silence, the undoing of years spent shrinking myself to fit inside the comfort of fear that grief created. I will not swallow my words to make them easier for the world to digest.
Veronica removes a piece of tape from her jumpsuit.
I am no longer allowing grief to hold me captive. I am proof that becoming is both loud and quiet, both trembling and sure.
A short film following two young creators, Celene and Sidney, through one ordinary day and the quiet question of why we keep creating. An excerpt from the opening:
INT. CELENE’S BEDROOM – MORNING
A mirror leans against the wall. CELENE stands in front of it in a tank top and black pants, applying makeup. Focused. She performs a comedy set to herself.
CELENE (TO MIRROR)
I tried healing… turns out it has a return policy. Nobody told me that part.
She pauses. Adjusts.
CELENE (CONT’D)
No, no—okay— I tried healing, y’all… turns out there’s a return policy, and apparently I was past the 30 days… Ain’t that crazy?
Her smile fades slightly. She puts on her shirt and stares at herself in the mirror wearing a FAST FOOD UNIFORM. Silence.

I illustrate bold, soulful visuals that honor culture, evoke emotion, and transform stories into powerful works of art.
The gallery is where my digital illustration, design, and brand visuals hang together. Every commission starts with the story: who it’s for, what it needs to say, and what it should help someone feel.

Good Grief, Great GOD
What began as Vee’s own conversation with God through loss became a production that merges spoken word, visual art, music, movement, and testimony. It opens a space for people to grieve honestly, encounter God intimately, and rise with renewed hope.
The production is growing into larger stages, deeper programming, workshops, and a fuller ensemble. Sponsors and partners help sustain the show, support the artists, and keep it accessible to communities.
Curated playlists for creating, grieving, worshiping, and celebrating. Pick a record to put it on.
Résumés, prints, and anything else worth putting on paper.
Take home a piece from the collection, framed or unframed.
I design products the way I direct productions: start with the people, plan for the hard moments, and make the right thing easy to do.
My UX/UI work focuses on tools for churches, nonprofits, and communities, with AI that helps people work faster while people stay in charge of what goes live.
